Abstract Korea has experienced identity confusion and cultural severance undergoing the modernization, Japanese Invasion, Korean War, Westernization, etc. This brought the country with fragmented and institutionalized visual culture, centered on Western culture. In spite of this chaotic history, the shamanism thought has developed becoming the root of Korean visual culture, as the thought has been rooted into our daily lives providing Korean people's cultural basis for a long time. It is the oldest source of mankind's culture which has evolved and developed according to the society, custom, culture, etc. Korean shamanism, called as shaman culture, has been the component of Korean's inner world, existing on the base of the culture. In this context, this study tries to review the formative characteristics shown in the patterns of folding screens, which connote the Korean shamanism, and search for the fundamental basis of the visual language and the underlying answer for the basis of the Korean specific formative sense. As such, this study reviewed shamanism and folding screens' patterns via previous studies and related documents, and then, analyzed the formative characteristics of shamanism patterns shown in the folding screens. As a result, firstly, there were mainly non-artful and exaggerated patterns. These provided the hint of the beauty of humor. Secondly, in the layout, in order for the maximization of hopes for luck, diagonal composition or inverse perspective were used. Lastly, symbolic and strong colors based on the principle of Eumyang O-haeng (Yin-yang Five Elements), Coexistence & Conflicts. We hope the result of this study may be utilized as the basic research material for Korean specific visual language and expects the national level new attention on the identity of the Korean design.   Keyword Shamanism(샤머니즘), Folding screens(병풍), Self culture visual language(자문화 시각언어)     요약 한국은 근대화, 일제강점기, 6.25 한국전쟁, 서구화 등을 거치면서 정체성 혼란과 문화단절을 겪었다. 이로 인해 서구 중심의 단편적이고 제도화된 시각문화가 만연해 있다. 이러한 혼돈의 역사에도 오랜 시간 한국인의 문화적 토대를 이루며 우리 일상에 널리 뿌리내린 샤머니즘 사상은 한국 시각문화의 근간을 이루며 발전해왔다. 그것은 사회, 관습, 풍토 등에 따라 다양하게 변화 및 발전해 온 인류의 가장 오래된 문화의 근원이다. 무속이라고 일컫는 한국의 샤머니즘은 문화의 저변에 깔려 한국인의 내면세계를 형성해왔다. 본 연구는 한국 샤머니즘이 내포된 병풍의 문양에 나타난 조형적 특성을 살펴보고 시각언어의 근본적 토대와 한국적 조형의식의 형성 근거에 대한 근원적인 답을 찾으려는 것이다. 이에 본 연구는 자(自)문화 시각언어를 연구하기 위해 선행연구 및 관련 문헌자료 등을 통해 샤머니즘과 병풍의 문양을 고찰한 후 병풍에 나타난 샤머니즘 문양의 조형적 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 무기교적이며 과장된 형태가 주로 나타났다. 이를 통해 해학미를 엿볼 수 있었다. 둘째, 레이아웃에서는 복을 바라는 염원의 극대화를 꾀하기 위해 사선구도나 역원근법을 사용하였으며 마지막으로 음양오행 상생상극의 원리에 의한 상징적이고 강렬한 색채가 사용된 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 한국적 시각언어의 기초 연구자료로 활용되길 바라며, 국가차원에서 한국의 디자인정체성에 대한 새로운 관심이 재고 되기를 기대한다.
